What is an SSL Certificate
An SSL certificate is a certificate that ensures that data arrives securely over the Internet connection without others being able to access that data. The data is encrypted when it is sent and then only decrypted when it arrives at the recipient. This way, the data being sent is always secure. This is important because the privacy of your visitors/customers should be number one. By using an SSL certificate you also ensure that their data cannot simply be picked up by hackers or “virtual burglars” and in that area you only keep satisfied customers.
Different types of SSLs
Sure! There are several types of SSLs. Think carefully about which one might apply to you. Domain SSL Only
This will apply to most websites. These have the standard security and include both the “www” and “non-www” domain.
Wildcard-domain SSL
You need this when you want to establish multiple domain names under 1 ssl. You then also need to do validation for each domain to make sure they belong to you. Examples of Multi-domain:
- domainA.com
- domainnameB.com
Wildcard-domain SSL
You need this when you have multiple subdomains. This is valid up to 1 layer deep, for example:
- domain1.domainname.com
- domain2.domainname.com
If you want a 2nd layer, a new wildcard must be requested for it. Consider:
- domainA.domain1.domainname.com
- domainB.domain1.domainname.com
You should then request a wildcard for *.domain1.domainname.com
